Indulge your palate with South Tyrolean cuisine
Cuisine in South Tyrol has a long tradition
The cuisine of South Tyrol, especially in the holiday region of Merano/Meran, is a seductive melting pot of culinary influences from old Austria, Tyrol and Italy's gastronomic wealth, particularly from the neighbouring regions of Trentino, Lombardy and Veneto. Whether in the restaurants of Scena or in cosy mountain huts, you can experience the inexhaustible variety of dishes, which are characterised by local, high-quality products available at weekly and farmers' markets.
In the Merano gourmet workshop, the cuisine is constantly evolving: traditional dishes such as dumplings, dumplings and apple strudel unfold their full potential through new interpretations with Mediterranean and Alpine ingredients, led by passionate chefs who experiment with creative approaches and tried-and-tested ingredients.
Modern South Tyrolean cuisine is a wonderful example of how completely new worlds of flavour can be created by merging different styles. It is deeply rooted in down-to-earth Tyrolean cuisine and at the same time draws inspiration from the Mediterranean cooking tradition, through which it has developed its preference for fresh herbs, exquisite oils and refined preparations.

South Tyrolean apple strudel
South Tyrolean apple strudel is an unmistakable symbol of South Tyrolean cuisine and perfectly epitomises the charm of this region. This tempting pastry is traditionally made with fresh, juicy apples from the local orchards, which grow in great variety in South Tyrol. In the filling, the apples are mixed with sugar, cinnamon and often sultanas, coated in a delicious shortcrust pastry.
South Tyrolean doughnuts
South Tyrolean doughnuts are a delicious dessert and an integral part of the South Tyrolean baking tradition. They consist of a fine yeast dough that is moulded into small round or square pockets and then fried in hot fat. The most characteristic feature, however, is the filling, which traditionally consists mostly of cranberry or apricot jam, but sometimes also of curd cheese or poppy seeds.
VISIT A WINE CELLAR
In addition to fine cuisine, South Tyrol is home to an impressive mix of traditional wine cellars, whose origins date back centuries, and contemporary cellar architecture, whose linear designs blend seamlessly into the surrounding vineyards.
In Scena/Schenna and Merano/Meran, on a sunny plateau spoilt by Mediterranean currents and a mild climate, high-quality wines are produced from the grape varieties grown on the fertile soil. The skills, knowledge and passion of the local winegrowers contribute significantly to this success. In this region, where there are few but excellent vineyards, quality takes precedence over quantity. Around 30 independent winegrowers cultivate a total area of around 30 hectares. Their sustainable and careful management guarantees the exquisite quality of the wine.
